exhibitions-through-the-lens-2010-poster-webI will be a featured photographer at the annual ‘Through The Lens’ exhibition. The show is presented by Gallery Artsplus, Belleville and follows my successful debut exhibition as the feature photographer in their Equinox show during 2009.

Through the Lens is Gallery Artsplus’s only exclusive photography show of the season and features work from some of the best photographers in Eastern Ontario.

About 10 prints will be on display including the award winning print - ‘Reflections on a train Journey’ -  which features in the poster. Work will also include aerial landscapes from the Polepics mast and two of my aviation images.

The show may be also be the first public appearance of my one and only nude study to date - ‘Journey into Labor’

Red, White, Sparkling….. I’ve no preference although I must add that I am not drinking it, rather producing images for Huff Estates - one of the largest wineries and vineyards in PEC.

Other than resisting the temptation to enjoy the contents, the greatest challenge when creating catalogue reference images is to control the light and avoid finding your reflection in the glass. While there is a definite look required - using the term industry standard highlights sounds to clinical here - it is also important that the images do not end up looking computer generated either.

For those who may consider that this kind of work is just a photoshop exercise;  most of the work is done at the capture stage using a range of light-boxes, reflectors and light absorbers, not to mention a very large piece of black material. Yes there are lots of things you can do in the processing, but it is far easier in most cases to create a good file to start with.

Thanksgiving Dawn

October 25th, 2009

It’s great to be up early, and a few days ago - well Thanksgiving Monday to be precise, we were out and about to test the mast in some lower light conditions. It was the first Big frost of the season for Prince Edward County too.

We drove out to a location that CEO and Founder Steven Draper has photographed from before - at ground level - to set up the mast and catch the first rays of the sun. Looking at the cloud cover moving in, it was certainly touch and go as to whether any sun would make it at all!

We raised the pole and then had to sit and wait, we’ll let the photographs - all taken from the same spot within a few minutes of each other - tell the rest of the Story.

There will be 1200 people at supper…

September 3rd, 2009

Prince Edward County is one of those places where local produce means knowing the farmer, their farm and actually seeing the vegetables and livestock grow. When it rains we all celebrate because we know our growing food needs it.

For the past couple of years there has been a celebration of local food, with what is known as the Harvestin supper. It started off with a few hundred people, but now 1200 people come out to enjoy local corn on the cob, a slice of beef and other local delights,  in one big street party.

A 40,000′ Industrial Challenge.

August 28th, 2009

The problem with industrial units is that many of them were never built to be photographed from the ground. Size, clutter, even the location generates photographic challenges if your limited to just few feet. However from the top of our mast the view is a completely different, and quiet literally puts everything into perspective!

Local Realtor, Sean McKinny realized that and hired Polepics to show off the best angle of 40,000 square feet of prime Belleville commercial real estate.  And below are a few images from our evening shoot.

Almost everything can benefit from the polepics angle,  even your competitors if they hire us first! So don’t delay, give us a call and let us show off your best angle.

Estate Portrait, is an Aerial Surprise!

July 15th, 2009

It’s always exciting when the phone rings at Polepics mission control. Nearing the end of June we had a call requesting an ‘old world effect’ portrait of an estate on the shores of Prince Edward County.

The time frame to complete the project was short, and on top of that the image was to be a surprise for the house owner. A fairly discrete, if thats possible with a bazooka looking mast strapped to the roof, drive by was carried out to check when the lighting would be best. And so on a thundery afternoon a few days later Polepics turned up ready for action. Thankfully the cloudsstayed in the background, and the work began.

Case Study - Hollandale Garden Centre

June 14th, 2009

Polepics was recently asked to create aerial images for Hollandale, a successful family garden centre and landscape design company near Trenton, Ontario

Timing was fairly critical - the pictures were the last required part of the new web design; and to add extra pressure the spring blossom was well established on some trees. Polepics was able to make a location visit within 48 hours to evaluate the site and assess lighting. Early morning lighting was established as the best source of illumination and so a few days later Polepics turned up bright and early, ready for action

An illuminating Experience with Blooming Lilac!

May 23rd, 2009

In Prince Edward County we have about two weeks of amazing colour and perfume as the miles of old Lilac hedgerows burst into bloom. A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of photographing a house that is surrounded by lilacs. Our client was really happy with the shots we captured that day,  but because we can recognize the potential for a great shot, we promised go back to get the photograph when things we at there blooming best!!

And today we arrived early, very early! and set up our equipment, fired off one test shot (above) and immediately our beautiful morning sun disappeared, as if releasing the shutter had switched off the lights. Despite the forecast of perfect skies a layer of cloud had drifted rather unfortunately across the sky, hiding the sun and providing rather flat light.

it helps to be an optimist!

It would have been tempting to pack up and go back to bed! But not for polepics! Our long experience with fine art and landscape photography has taught us that great photography is often all about the light, and that means being very, very  patient. We knew if we waited a small gap would eventually appear (it helps to be an optimist!) and illuminate the property, almost spotlight like.

Well we had to wait a long time,  but eventually the break came and during about 5 seconds of light we managed to get our shot. Read on to see it!
