Photography that's head and shoulders above the rest
Above The County
Picton by Day
Jun 8th
Polepics is currently busy photographing buildings and locations around Picton, Prince Edward County. The shoot list - including some night shots published here recently – for the BIA project is complete, however there are a number of other locations that are worthy of a Polepics image and these will be completed over the next week or two.
Picton at Night
May 24th
As part of the Picton BIA assignment I’ve been around Picton over the past few days taking unique angles of the town. I’ll be posting a few of these over the next couple of days, however I wanted to kick off by showing some impressive night shots from the mast. More >
Polepics awarded Picton BIA Photography Contract.
Apr 22nd
This is the first ever Landscape I photographed using the Polepics mast system. Taken nearly a year ago at the end of April 2009 it shows my home town of Picton in Prince Edward County, Picton Bay and the Countryside to the North where I live. The concrete pad was built to celebrate the Millennium and represents “The County of Prince Edward” wards. As I created the image in the fading light, I realized that I was seeing a composition that had never been seen or photographed before and the unique possibilities Polepics offered suddenly became clear.
A day or two ago I received notification that the Picton Business Improvement Association has awarded Polepics a professional service contract to to supply photography for an up coming advertising brochure. A total of about 12 images comprising of a number of New shots, plus some library images will be required. Millennium Point, which is also a Signature Edition Print, was one of the sample images in my successful application.
Inside Wellington Arena
Apr 5th
Before we take a peak inside, I’ve been requested by some readers to show more pictures of the Polepics equipment in action.
So here is “Polepics One,” looking smart with the new lettering parked in a referenced position. Every shoot I generally take a series of shots from this spot as it not only provides a great vantage point showing the whole of the Arena and also the main Entrance, but being close to the gate it is not likely to have equipment parked there!
In this image the mast is at close to 60′ and I’m using a single tether line which clips to the mounting plate at the top of the mast, and wraps around the truck rack system. Although the mast is stable enough not to need any tether lines below 25km/h I generally run a line to prevent any excessive head movement should a gust happen.
Now to the Inside.
Large doors at the back of the Arena enabled Polepics One to enter into the construction world inside. In fact this was the first shoot from the truck inside, the portable mast having been used inside several buildings before. The big issue inside most buildings is a lack of light overall. However the Nikon D700 system is arguably one of the worlds best low light dSLR cameras. But where light does come in it is very bright leading to a situation of either exposed interior, and a white blur of exterior, or some hint of the exterior and a very underexposed and dark inside.
Thanksgiving Dawn
Oct 25th
It’s great to be up early, and a few days ago – well Thanksgiving Monday to be precise, we were out and about to test the mast in some lower light conditions. It was the first Big frost of the season for Prince Edward County too.
We drove out to a location that CEO and Founder Steven Draper has photographed from before – at ground level – to set up the mast and catch the first rays of the sun. Looking at the cloud cover moving in, it was certainly touch and go as to whether any sun would make it at all!
We raised the pole and then had to sit and wait, we’ll let the photographs – all taken from the same spot within a few minutes of each other – tell the rest of the Story.
Sandbanks Provincial Park – Resident Artist 2009.
May 2nd
Today Polepics learnt of some very exciting news. Steven Draper, Polepics CEO and Founder has been successful in achieving the title and role of Sandbanks Provincial Park, Resident Artist 2009. This honorary position will see Steven and his Polepics aerial photography mast system, along with his conventional photography techniques engaged in a Summer of photographic activities at the Park. Previous holders of this position include County artist ‘Mia Lane’ who’s depiction of wildlife is seen on Canadian Postage stamps.
“Like Never Before”
“I hope to show many of the 500,000 annual visitors to Sandbanks this amazing place like never before; I want to take them into the trees and show them the world from the perspective of the birds. Photography is a great way to open your eyes to the beauty that is around, and by discussing my passion, technique and view of the world with visitors I hope that they’ll see and appreciate the world around them even more.” [SD]

Steven’s image PolePics One, shown above, captures the view across the tree tops at Sandbanks and was the first picture taken from the Polepics mast system. It and recently featured in a local gallery exhibition, Equinox, along with another 12 of his images.
We’ll be publishing more information on this website in due course, so why not bookmark us and come back later. If you want to be added to an email list to be amongst the first to know of the latest news then why not leave us a comment. To find out more about Sandbanks please Click Here
Above The County Series – Millennium Point
Apr 30th
We just love creating wonderful photographs at Polepics! Prince Edward County is a haven for artists, and people who come to enjoy charming rural views and some of Canada’s best cultural entertainment. On the way home from a successful house shoot we stopped of at a local viewpoint known as “Millennium Point.” In itself it offers a pretty good view of the Town of Picton, which sits quietly at the end of Picton Bay. We were really keen to give it ‘The PolePics’ treatment, see if we could ”Show off it’s best Angle!” as the sun started to dip.
If your wondering what it looks like from the ground, here is one from the ‘family album’ taken last summer – we thought it was pretty good – until last night!
