In Prince Edward County we have about two weeks of amazing colour and perfume as the miles of old Lilac hedgerows burst into bloom. A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of photographing a house that is surrounded by lilacs. Our client was really happy with the shots we captured that day, but because we can recognize the potential for a great shot, we promised go back to get the photograph when things we at there blooming best!!

And today we arrived early, very early! and set up our equipment, fired off one test shot (above) and immediately our beautiful morning sun disappeared, as if releasing the shutter had switched off the lights. Despite the forecast of perfect skies a layer of cloud had drifted rather unfortunately across the sky, hiding the sun and providing rather flat light.
it helps to be an optimist!
It would have been tempting to pack up and go back to bed! But not for polepics! Our long experience with fine art and landscape photography has taught us that great photography is often all about the light, and that means being very, very patient. We knew if we waited a small gap would eventually appear (it helps to be an optimist!) and illuminate the property, almost spotlight like.
Well we had to wait a long time, but eventually the break came and during about 5 seconds of light we managed to get our shot. Read on to see it!

Today Polepics learnt of some very exciting news. Steven Draper, Polepics CEO and Founder has been successful in achieving the title and role of Sandbanks Provincial Park, Resident Artist 2009. This honorary position will see Steven and his Polepics aerial photography mast system, along with his conventional photography techniques engaged in a Summer of photographic activities at the Park. Previous holders of this position include County artist ‘Mia Lane’ who’s depiction of wildlife is seen on Canadian Postage stamps.
“Like Never Before”
“I hope to show many of the 500,000 annual visitors to Sandbanks this amazing place like never before; I want to take them into the trees and show them the world from the perspective of the birds. Photography is a great way to open your eyes to the beauty that is around, and by discussing my passion, technique and view of the world with visitors I hope that they’ll see and appreciate the world around them even more.” [SD]

Steven’s image PolePics One, shown above, captures the view across the tree tops at Sandbanks and was the first picture taken from the Polepics mast system. It and recently featured in a local gallery exhibition, Equinox, along with another 12 of his images.
We’ll be publishing more information on this website in due course, so why not bookmark us and come back later. If you want to be added to an email list to be amongst the first to know of the latest news then why not leave us a comment. To find out more about Sandbanks please Click Here

We just love creating wonderful photographs at Polepics! Prince Edward County is a haven for artists, and people who come to enjoy charming rural views and some of Canada’s best cultural entertainment. On the way home from a successful house shoot we stopped of at a local viewpoint known as “Millennium Point.” In itself it offers a pretty good view of the Town of Picton, which sits quietly at the end of Picton Bay. We were really keen to give it ‘The PolePics’ treatment, see if we could ”Show off it’s best Angle!” as the sun started to dip.
If your wondering what it looks like from the ground, here is one from the ‘family album’ taken last summer - we thought it was pretty good - until last night!

It’s that time of year, Spring is here, in-fact today felt more like summer. The trees are in bud and the birds are busy flying around eating the bugs and building their nests. It’s all systems go in polepics mission control too, but that’s exactly the way we love it. Today polepics met up with realtor Jim Wait at a gorgeous limestone house in Prince Edward County.
We could waffle on, but photo’s just say so much more.

When it comes to getting off the ground, CEO and Founder of Polepics, Steven Draper, has a wealth of knowledge. In fact he has several thousand hours experience flying commercial airliners all around the world.
But does a camera pole have anything in common with piloting a Boeing 777? We catch up with Steven on a recent test session to find out.

A head for heights is certainly still needed!
“I feel that my experience as an airline captain, piloting big jets like the 777 around the world certainly adds a lot to my business. For example I’m not just ‘having a go with the mast’ this evening, I’m actually reviewing every aspect of it’s operation and using this to produce a workflow that I can use everyday on location. There isn’t a lot of global experience using masts readily avaliable, certainly not big 70′ truck mounted masts like this with $6000 of computer controlled camera perched on top - so I have to work out most things for myself.

Often the subject behind the Camera is some what shy, but we have managed to sneak a few images of the PolePics truck yesterday morning with the mast and camera in the ‘ready to launch’ position.
Extending the mast would stretch the picture to most folks ceilings!
Oh it goes much higher! This is the just the ‘ready’ position with the camera about 12′ up. Fully extended it would be just over 70′ up, infact this picture would need to extend 600% - that’s close to many peoples ceilings to fit it all in!! My goodness imagine all the things we could see from up there!

Pole*pics will soon be in the news. The editor of a specialist local newspaper emailed us and asked if they could come over and have a chat about pole*pics. Amazing to think the concept and website is having that sort of affect already!
Now we know it’s important to be able to illustrate the concept clearly, but with our mast just over a week away from delivery and therefore no real photo’s - life can be a bit tough at times. So we scratched out heads and decided that this may well be an excuse for some fun, creating a simulated newspaper shoot scenario using our favourite toy from old Lego!
